Urban Adaptation to Climate Change - model and simulation of Burjassot Municipality (ES)

Our Action Group RESEWAM-O is currently developing a study on “Urban Adaptation to Climate Change. Evaluation and Assessment of the Burjassot Municipality Drainage System and Proposal to Improve its Efficacy and Sustainability”.

Urban Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) is a crucial issue in urban water resources management at a global level. RESEWAM-O is tackling it here in an original and innovative way by integrating conventional scientific and technical resources with high-resolution remote sensing techniques, and including information available on hydrogeology, lithology, watersheds and sub-basins, groundwater bodies, etc., retrospective studies on precipitations and floods and their impacts on the Burjassot Municipality in Spain using Earth Observation data, evolution of urban development affecting the growth of sealed surfaces and impervious areas, also with high-spatial-resolution remote sensing data, the use of a high-resolution digital elevation model, and the application of an urban runoff model that integrates the above information to simulate different scenarios capable of evaluating the impact of different extreme events causing urban floods in different areas of the municipality that would thus be clearly identified. The model would be validated with the simulation of close-in-time retrospective events compatible with the availability of remote sensing data.
