Agrotech - Production of willow for the energy sector and for protection of the aquatic environment.
This project will in a large scale be a demonstration of the possibilities for an environmentally and economically profitable way of producing willow chips for the energy sector.
With concerns for the environment large areas of agricultural farmland, e.g. along streams, rivers and lakes will no longer be environmentally profitable to cultivate with the common one year crop. But willow is a perennial crop with high potential for energy production and absorption of nutrients, thus reducing the leaching of nutrients to the water environment.
First of a kind
Many actors are involved including landowners, cogeneration, natural and environmental interests, businesses and others. The focus is to carefully utilizing the most environmental sensitive areas for willow production – with respect to various concerns.
When fully operational 1,500 ha of environmentally sensitive areaes will be used for growing willow and the expectation is to gain annually up to 240 TJ of energy, equivalent to 5,600 tons of fuel oil. In addition, water can be saved for at least 67 tones of nitrogen per year compared to the discharge, if the land was still cultivated with one year crops.
