ZINNAE-urban cluster for the efficient use of water

The Urban Cluster for the Efficient Use of Water (ZINNAE) was officially created in 2010, after more than ten years of collaboration between its current members, to unite and coordinate regional efforts to improve efficiency in water usage. ZINNAE's mission:  to become an international collaboration, knowledge and innovation referent for an efficient and sustainable water use in urbanized areas. ZINNAE is comprised of 24 members together with dedicated research and higher education institutions, local and regional and supra-regional public authorities as well as other relevant stakeholders. As a whole, the cluster involves most of actors in the region that operate in the sector of water management and efficiency. Our projects

We are developing the following projects:
1) ZERO Park: Parque Zero is an initiative for the implementation of a green urban area as a platform to experiment with products and services that are efficient in the use of natural resources. The key elements of the Project are two: 
- Preparing and applying efficiency criteria in the use of resources (water, energy, nutrients) in urban green areas 
- Gaining companies of the sector interested in testing or demonstrating their new products and services 
Parque Zero looks forward to constituting itself as a collaborative platform for experimentation, open to the participation of the companies of the sector. But it is also an initiative that intends to reformulate the criteria in the design and maintenance of green spaces towards efficiency and functionality of the space.www.parquezero.com
2) Urban Hydrogeology Management System: the project  gathers and puts in use all the hydro geological information available in the urban environment; and from a real time monitoring network based on a set of sensors that register piezometric level data and hydro chemical parameters (salinity, Eh, pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen), extraction and return flows.The development of the system is based in multiplatform web Technologies, under the paradigm of open source software (OSS) so that it can be installed in any operative system. The system can inter operate with other relevant information centres with SDI. Integration of these technologies in a unique platform, ad hoc designed for the elaboration of subsoil Management Plans as a tool for the cities sustainable development. We are collaborating with TECNARA in this project.

3) RENOVEA: Economic and environmental impact of a RENOVE Plan for water and energy efficiency at household level. RENOVEA has the purpose of measuring the economic and environmental impact of water use technology renovation in households (bathroom fittings, showers, toilets and common building facilities – tanks). This project was born as a response of many ZINNAE partners, manufacturers of water-saving devices and installers with the purpose of fighting against the resistance to technological change and the consumers' investment on water saving equipments.

4) Water efficiency in the European urban areas: this project will run for three years with the participation of a network of regions: Aragon, in Spain; Provence-Alpes - Côte dAzur, in France; the East of England, in the United Kingdom; Eastern Galilee, in Israel, and Malta. The project is part also in the program of regions of knowledge of the 7th framework programme of the European Commission. The objective of this work is to influence regional, national and European administrations to continue innovating in areas that already have some competitive advantage.The objective of this work is to influence regional, national and European administrations to continue innovating in areas that already have some competitive advantage. Thus, aspects in which these regions have potential that you will allow to be R+D+ i engines within the scope of the efficient management of water in urban areas will be established. On this analysis of capabilities will be to propose lines of action for the promotion and public funding of the work of innovation in this field.
Business entities within the cluster - The companies represented in the cluster covers most of the expertise areas aligned with the proposal subject, including: (1) water distribution networks and infrastructures; (2) water sector manufacturers and suppliers; (3) products and services integrators; housing sector; hydrological solutions; building sector

R&D&I entities within the cluster - Numerous research groups working in water issues are represented by a number of institutions which, besides the most relevant areas of expertise, are cite as following: (1) University of Zaragoza and attached institutes (such as I3A) that provide a multi-discipline offer of S/T capacities in water efficiency; (2) EUPLA-Engineering Technical College that offers ITC applications for water efficiency, water quality control and institutional and regulation improvements; (3) CIRCE - Research Centre for Energy Resources and Consumption (through its Resources Area Division) is devoted to energy conversion systems (focusing on the evaluation thermodynamics of natural resources to be converted into useful energy), eco-efficiency and sustainability, (4) ITA- The Aragon Institute of Technology is responsible to the Department of Industry and Innovation of the Government of Aragon. Its objective is the promotion of research, development and innovation (R+D+i) in the business sector, acting as a catalyst for productivity and competitiveness.

Public Authorities - Zaragoza City Council (founding institution of ZINNAE Cluster) represents the local public authority with competences in water supply and sanitation across the city. The Ebro Hydrographic Confederation (CHE), attached to the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, is the oldest and largest river basin authority in Spain (it has a regional and supra-regional level), responsible for the management of the Ebro river basin, also one of the major watersheds in Europe. The regional level is also present in ZINNAE through AREX-Aragón Exterior, an agency for promoting internationalization attached to the Ministry of Economy and Employment of the Government of Aragón. 

Other actors - The Foundation for Ecology and Development (ECODES)  is engaged to raising awareness and promoting a water-saving culture, a responsible consumption, understanding of the climate change phenomenon and GHG emissions and corporate social responsibility. Zaragoza Valdespartera Eco-city S.A. is an innovative public-private housing development for residential purposes mainly, based on resource efficiency and sustainability criteria. It is participated by Zaragoza City Council, the Regional Government and various financial entities. The Zaragoza Fair is part of the Spanish leading fair organizations. Every two years organizes SMAGUA, the International Exhibition of Water and Irrigation, becoming a leading technology showcase and an excellent business platform.
