Institut Quimic de Sarria (IQS)

Institut Quimic de Sarria in Barcelona, Spain  (IQS) is a higher education institution fwith over one hundred years of experience and is specialized in Science, Engineering and Management. It is located in Barcelona since 1916, it is a founding member of Universitat Ramon Llul and is well recognized by national and international accreditations (AACSB, ABET).

IQS has two university Schools, Engineering and Management that offer Undergraduate, Graduate and PhD programs in the area of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology and Bioengineering, Industrial Engineering, Pharmacy, Management and Marketing. The teaching methodology at IQS is based on combining an intense practical and experimental section with theoretical studies.

The Water Smart Research Group at IQS is working on environmental engineering and molecular and process simulation. The group is made up of a team of multidisciplinary scientists who combine chemical engineering, biotechnology and analysis with a theoretical-experimental approach to advance in the sustainability of the processes. The objective is to respond to the current challenges of society: climate change, water scarcity and population growth.

The main lines of research of the group are focused on :

Water treatment and reuse: Development of new more efficient and sustainable processes of disinfection, advanced oxidation (AOP), adsorption, membranes, biofilms, elimination of recalcitrant organic compounds through fungi and nitrogen elimination through partial nitrification and Anammox processes.

We can work on water remediation: electrooxidation with a cell of  Boron-Doped Diamond (BDD) Electrodes for Electrochemical Water Treatment, photooxidation with UV lamps (traditional and LED), ultrafiltration. Nitrate and ammonium removal with biofilms.

The group is part of the RIS3 project "Research on water regeneration technologies and risk management for reuse" The main objective of the Regireu project, within the framework of the 2016 RIS3CAT call and the 2014-2020 FEDER Operational Program of Catalonia, is to develop innovative and competitive technology worldwide that will overcome the main technological barriers that limit the implementation of the regeneration of urban and industrial wastewater for subsequent reuse. The regional project must allow generating new knowledge necessary to develop technology that provides competitive advantages over current technology and position the water sector in Catalonia among the main global suppliers of technology for the regeneration of wastewater.
