The Group of Environmental Engineering and Microbiology (GEMMA) of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. BarcelonaTech (UPC)
The Group of Environmental Engineering and Microbiology (GEMMA) is located at the Department of Hydraulic, Maritime and Environmental Engineering (DEHMA) of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. BarcelonaTech (UPC). The Group is dedicated to interdisciplinary research, innovation, knowledge transfer and education in environmental engineering. Current main research topics are:
- Wastewater treatment with algae based culture and biogas production from algae biomass: this research topic combines wastewater treatment and bioenergy production (energy from wastewater). It is focused on the cultivation of microalgae in experimental high rate algae ponds and photobioreactors, biomass harvesting and anaerobic digestion to produce biogas.
- Phosphorous removal and recovery from wastewater: the main objective of this topic is to develop economically and technically feasible processes that aim at maximizing phosphorus removal from wastewater and ulterior recycle and reuse.
- Microbial fuel cells in constructed wetlands
- Life Cycle Assessment of products and technologies: we use LCA to compare the environmental performance of novel and conventional technologies.
