India-EU Water Forum: Jointly adapting European lessons for Indian rivers @ India Water Week 2017

India-EU Water Forum: Jointly adapting European lessons for Indian rivers @ India Water Week 2017

The India-EU Water Partnership (IEWP) started in 2015, and aims to exchange viewpoints and foster the knowledge transfer between Europe and India on how to better manage water. So far, technical exchange has happened on an ad-hoc basis, and has resulted in briefings, workshops and joint action for addressing data management (e.g. Blueprint for Water). For the 2017-2020 period, nine Priority Areas have been identified, working against established goals, outcomes and milestones.

These nine priority areas cover those topics where action is being taken by the Government of India, and where the European Union expertise can significantly contribute to the uptake of innovative solutions for water management; and cover the following: Integrated planning, ecological flows, water reuse, groundwater consumption and recharge, Water use in irrigation and solar pumping, Capacity building & Collaboration in Research, Innovation & Technology.

For example, in the field of Integrated River Basin Management Planning, the European Union adopted a common legislation in the year 2000, and since then two planning cycles have been implemented in more than 100 river basins in the EU, with varied geography and water quality and/or quantity problems. This recent experience has brought a lot of positive and genitive lessons learned, which can support better planning and implementation in Indian river basins such as the Ganga, Krishna, Godavari or Mahanadi.

The session aims to present the Priority Areas and their ambitious targets, as well as to showcase existing European experience in water and river basin management which well adapted can support action in India. Specific examples of EU experience and the positive and negative learned lessons will be shared in the session. We also aim for discussion with stakeholders and the public on complementary and synergic initiatives or ideas, to maximise the impact of the Partnership’s actions.
