Water Justice (AG117)

The Water Justice Action Group is an international coalition of important water justice network organizations and research institutes that will develop and apply the innovative concept of water justice in the realm of democratic multi-scalar water governance.

Policy-makers and civil society organizations ask for more grounded and interdisciplinary research and concrete management instruments for implementing more equitable, democratic and sustainable water governance programs and mechanism for conflict resolution. European and low-income country water development programmes, research and education centres, and water user federations (for fishing, recreation, irrigation, hydro-electricity) express a demand for tailor-made training and capacity-building on the issue of equitable water governance.

The Water Justice Action Group includes key players along the water value chain and these organizations express demand for expertise advisory, training and research on the different attributes of water quantity and quality, also related to the European Water Framework Directive. At the same time there is demand for inventories of water governance related conflicts from UN agencies and other international organizations. The water policy and water scientific institutes show demand for capacity regarding the implementation of interdisciplinary, multi-scalar and comparative research on water justice and democratic governance. In terms of graduate research and teaching there is large demand for the development of a political ecology of water.

The Water Justice Action Group will make a participatory inventory of existing water related conflicts, mechanisms for water conflict resolution, and map local democratic and sustainable water governance practices. Important worldwide network organizations will facilitate the dissemination of results of these inventories and provide advisory services and training to demanding governmental and non-governmental organizations. This will contribute to the implementation of local and national water conflict resolution mechanisms, local democratic resource governance and more sustainable and democratic water management.
