DISSME - Demand-Driven Innovation Support for SMEs via NNWPs (AG131)

The National Water Partnerships (NWPs) have joined forces in the DIS-SMEs Action Group to support SMEs and turn the network of National Water Partnerships into a functional SME support system and a spinning wheel for cross national matchmaking.  The overall mission of the Action Group is to create more opportunities for SMEs to successfully bring innovative water technologies to the (international) market and to work together in a smart, pan-European network establishing a two-way communication channel between SMEs and EIP-Water.

The Action Group uses two specific strategies to address and overcome lack of capacities, knowledge and entrepreneurial skills that prevents SMEs in the water sector to effectively reach new (international) markets and upscale the uptake of their innovative products and services.

1. Providing business support to SMEs through the use of appropriate tools

The Action Group builds upon the existing structure of National Water Partnerships to disseminate and implement the appropriate tools (e.g. developed and tested by the EU-funded INNOWATER project) that enable SMEs to innovate and bring their innovations to the market. This will help SMEs to define end users’ economic, regulatory, and risk profiles in order to develop unique selling points. The Action Group also organises activities to support SMEs in the development of a convincing value proposition and choosing the right business model.

2. Maximising cross-national matchmaking between SMEs through roadshows, export roundtables, brokerage events

National Water Partnerships have identified the need for concrete contacts as a main barrier for internationalisation purposes. Therefore the Action Group organises and makes use of established events to give SMEs the opportunity to increase visibility of their products and services in areas outside their current scope (i.e. water-users) and to pro-actively facilitate matchmaking between SMEs in different countries as well as to bridge research organisations with businesses in the water sector.

The Action Group tests the partnership model of the NWPs as a spinning wheel for cross national matchmaking to bring potential partners from members of the NWP’s and other water sector stakeholders together and support European SMEs to find potential (international) partners and end-users.

Currently the following National Water Partnerships are engaged in the Action Group: Catalan Water Partnership (CWP), Danish Water Forum (DWF), European Water Partnership (EWP), Finnish Water Forum (FWF), German Water Partnership (GWP), Netherlands Water Partnership, (NWP), Portuguese Water Partnership (PWP), Swiss Water Partnership (SWP).
