MAR4FARM. Workshops on MAR for the "general population" in rural areas. An experimental dissemination activity for the MtoM branch: "agroindustry"

Within the broad scope of industry branches that MAR to MARk€t is trying to involve, agroindustry plays an important role, as it is a classic activity very well connected to "New MAR" activities and sites.

The last 29th and 30th of October were held briefing workshops called MAR4FARM at Santiuste de San Juan Bautista and Gomezserracín (Segovia), respectively. Sessions were focused especially to farmers, so the technical language was avoided among the speakers. The irrigation communities collaborated actively in its dissemination and celebration.

The experience has been rewarding: in addition to bring the results of research projects to a rural area where some attendees expressed their feeling of being "forgotten", the range of dissemination of results of research projects has been expanded to the "general population", when this short of activity tends usually to be directed at scientists, technicians and professionals.

So, the action group proposes a new stage of dissemination with the aim of expanding the range of target groups receiving technological solutions. It is planned to increase this activity from now on.

Why MAR4FARM?

Since 2002, when MAR activities began in this sector of Arenales aquifer, (considered a construction for the general interest of the nation), recharge activities have been accomplished by means of the  irrigation community, who counted on the support, when they required it, from the technicians involved in the studies and construction work.

After a decade, some articles and books as well as abundant information have been published, specially directed to technicians and researchers, but there are still many users and farmers who ignore a great part of this activity. Within this context, this workshop, that has been called MAR4FARM is specially dedicated to farmers as main user of groundwater resources, in order to solve some doubts they could have (avoiding technical language), as: what were these building works made for?, why is it profitable

for agriculture?, how does the aquifer behave?, what should know a farmer on water managing?. These questions plus all those that might arise, will be debated by the technicians participating in the project, works, irrigation community board, municipalities, Douro river and Junta de Castille and Leon basin civil servants, as agents more dedicated to the activity, together with farmers, the real part of this story.

The activity, originally planned by MARSOL project as a dissemination activity, has counted on MAR to MARk€t support, who has participated very actively in the initiative. Also WIRE AG has promoted the presentations more related to the water-energy nexus.

Industry branch 1: Agroindustry in MtoM (presentation)

SOME CONCLUSIONS FROM THE WORKSHOP

  • It is necessary an appropriate management and maintenance of Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR facilities), as a key to improve water quality in the aquifer
  • To get a good water quality for irrigation, improving the one existing by means of MAR techniques, brings an added value for farmers, as better crops quality and further higher incomes
  • Lower energy consumption due to water table raise, and the consequent reduction of pumping cost, is, beyond any doubt,  profitable for farmers, due to the lower electricity bill
  • Irrigation communities must be part, and even the main chapters, in the operation and conservation of MAR devices. it is important to count on expert advise
  • SAT-MAR activities, understood as irrigation with reclaimed water, brings a good opportunity for future rural development, but requires a very careful and expert management, as well as permanent improvements
  • The dissemination of R&D advances to users is a key element for “future MAR”. it is important the cooperation of the receivers, what can be done by means of increasing their interest in the project. Providing advise on their economical savings plays an important role for this issue.

Comments

Hi all.

Hi all.

I have posted in dina-mar website, as a mirror site, pieces of news from the "MARtoMARk€t back to back" meeting and MAR4FARM presentations, in order to broaden the dissemination activities:

I´d like also to mention a personal interpretation from the comments expresed by Nikolaus F. at the end of the meeting:

It could be summarized as follows: "stop of running around and go just to the point", as the objectives of the AG are well defined.

Dear Alan, robot, or whoever;

Dear Alan, robot, or whoever; please refrain using this platform for interested people involved with the society development and climate change adverse impacts mitigation to give publicity for your casino. That is spamming and an undued use!

Dear members in the AG

Dear members in the AG

The next event to disseminate MAR to agroindustry will be held in Segovia, Spain, between 2015 March 9-11th in Coca, Santiuste and Gomezserracín Villages, in this case with the participation of the full MARSOL consortium for the doors opened session plus some invited experts and attendants upon request (technical closed doors session).

After the workshop we´ll release punctual info regarding the experience and the obtained feedback.

By the moment, please, pay atention to the programs in MARSOL and dina-mar (IAH) web sites (external links).
