Cleaning the River Ganga – From Data to Action @ India Water Week 2017

Cleaning the River Ganga – From Data to Action @ India Water Week 2017

Functioning river basin management highly depends on best possible datasets that enable well-informed decision-making towards targeted investments and effective action programmes. This is also highly relevant for the Ganga River. Hence, this session aims to present and discuss pollution hotspots along the Ganga River and how to address these with a cyclic programme of measures to limit negative impacts on water resources and in consequence livelihoods.

The session is based on joint work between the India-EU Water Partnership (IEWP), 2030 Water Resources Group, GIZ and the Indian authorities competent for water (MoWR; CWC; NMCG; CPCB).

An outline of on-going actions and improvements to clean the Ganga River also highlighting of remaining challenges will set the scene for the session. The following contributions will demonstrate how policy questions, the identification of pollution hotspots and improved monitoring networks along the Ganga River can guide policy makers, water managers and water users in the Ganga River Basin towards joint aims, actions and, hence, well-informed decision making. The transfer of European approaches to India will be reflected. A panel of key actors in Indian and European water resources and river basin management will discuss strategies and actions to successfully manage the Ganga River towards socio-economic and environmental objectives.
